While trying to put up this article, I tried to garner some knowledge and some facts about low self-esteem and what its manifestations are.
So here are some stunning facts I saw from surfing through the net about this phenomenon:
Teen girls that have a negative view of themselves are 4 times more likely to take part in activities with boys that they’ve ended up regretting later.
- Over 70% of girls age 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities, such as attending school, when they feel bad about their looks.
- 75% of girls with low self esteem reported engaging in negative activities like cutting, bullying, smoking and drinking, or disordered eating. This compares to 25% of girls with high self-esteem.
- A girl’s self-esteem is more strongly related to how she views her own body shape and body weight, than how much
she actually weighs. - Low self-esteem has been linked to violent behavior, school dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, suicide and low academic achievement
- 85% of the world’s populations are affected by low self-esteem.
How do we then tackle these self-esteem worries and be able to live our lives to the full?
Don’t worry, I will in the next few seconds share with you some cool strategies I used while trying to improve my own self-esteem.
So here are 5 amazing strategies for improving your self-esteem:
1. Strategy One | Self-discovery
Know Thy True Self!
This is the act of identifying your assets, your latent potentials, what makes you tick.
I mean to improve your self esteem means to understand yourself and what makes you different from others.
4 years ago, I suffered from a low self-esteem that I always find it really difficult to speak and relate with people as I was afraid of what will be said of me.
But for the first time in 2011, I looked really deep in the inside of me and discovered that thing that makes me unique and exceptional.
And I must confess to you that that singular discovery altered the course of my life for good and my self-worth skyrocketed.
“Explore in the inside of you and discover your true potential, after your discovery, ameliorate on it and it will yield to an endless success.” – Sam Adeyinka
Self discovery indeed is the way to go if truly you look to improving your self esteem.
2. Strategy Two | Practice Positive Self-Talk
If you think you can or think you can’t, you are right. Can you?
What do you say to yourself? How do you view and talk about yourself while addressing yourself in front of people? Do you know you act and become most times what you say about yourself? There is power in confessions.
If you think and say positive or negative things about yourself, chances are that you will become that thing you’re saying about yourself. What do you say about yourself?
Statistics have it that 95% of your emotions are determined by the way you talk to or about yourself.
Hence, learn to always talk positive affirmations about yourself. Remember, there is power in positive confessions!
“Your mouth controls your thinking”. – Bolaji Idowu
3. Strategy Three | Set Goals
Make Your Goals Plain!
This issue of setting goals cannot actually be overemphasized. You know why? That’s because to have succeeded in anything noteworthy in life’s endeavor means and involves around setting reasonable goals.
A lot of Nigerian and Africans generally complain of poverty and not having more than enough, they go about blaming their tragedies on the Government when they themselves are the cause of their mishaps.
You didn’t set a goal and you expect to live a stress free life? You must be a joker!
Trust me not having a goal aids the depreciation of your self-esteem but when you set a goal, even an achievable goal, you will see a boost in your self confidence and when that happens, it means you’ve succeeded in improving your self- esteem.
4. Strategy Four | Encompass yourself with Resources
Resourceful Kids!
By resources I mean surrounding yourself with great materials you easily can devour.
For me, those resources are motivational CDs, inspirational quips, good printed books and eBooks.
This resources helps in reawakening the sleeping giant in me and constantly reminds me of who I am and what I am structured to be.
What are your own resources? Tell me in the comment box.
5. Strategy Five | Be around those who appreciate you
Isn’t it obvious I’m appreciated here?
To improve your self-esteem, you’ll need to start associating yourself with those that will celebrate you instead of criticize you.
I realized that I excel more when in the gathering of those that appreciates me for the kind of person I am and the little things I contribute and that really has made a huge different for me.
Final Thoughts
You will excel and yes improve your self-esteem if only you could look deep in yourself and discover who you are made to be; practice positive affirmations; set reasonable and achievable goals and follow it up with disciplines actions; be a consumer of great resource such as books and the likes; and lastly, move with those that appreciate you for you are.
