Summer is finally here  and this year we are especially spoilt for choice in terms of activities to choose from, Wimbledon Tennis is currently under way in SW 19, straight after that the Olympics kick off and whilst that is going on we have the usual music festivals my favourite being the Jazz festival in Ealing.  If all of this is way too much and you just want to escape  but without leaving the country  the National Trust has a large selection of properties that you can visit  but of course we would we prefer that you escaped to Africa!

But what about your wardrobe?  Well fear not.Ethnic Suppliescan help. Ethnic Supplies supports women in the East African countries of Uganda, Tanzania and Madagascar by sourcing handmade handicrafts and fashion accessories from suppliers that support women to be financially independent or directly from established women’s groups in rural locations.

Nivo Razafimanjato

In this post I would especially like to draw your attention to the handmade Straw hat made in Madagascar by Nivo. The hats are made from raffia, they fold easily to fit into your handbag and pop up without losing shape. You might think I am biased here but the best attribute of these hats is the fact they keep the sun off your head as well as your neck. I don’t find this with other straw hats on the market.

Also from Madagascar is this Raw Silk basket. The basket has two elements to it, it starts out as a palm leave basket and to add style a raw silk fabric is sown around it and the edges and handles are reinforced with leather. The silk is collected from the forests of Madagascar and is hand woven into fabric. I wrote about the production process of raw wild silk over at Ethnic Supplies blog
